When I saw Wynton Marsalis at the Alabama Theater in Birmingham several years ago they did the first movement from A Love Supreme. One might question how well a piece written for tenor sax and rhythm section translated into a trumpet player's septet, but it was Wynton Marsalis playing John Coltrane, so yes, by definition it worked.
